Top 4 Best Hobbies for Veterans

JUNE 17, 2022 – If you’re like many veterans, you may be wondering what to do after the military. Luckily, there are endless opportunities for fun and engaging hobbies. Here are some of the best options to get started on your post-military journey.

1) Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It was developed in Brazil in the early 20th century, and has since become one of the most popular martial arts in the world. There are many benefits to learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, including improved fitness, self-defense skills, and confidence.

One of the main advantages of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is that it can be used effectively against larger opponents. This is due to the fact that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu relies on leverage and technique rather than size and strength. As a result, someone who knows Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can defend themselves against attackers of all sizes. In addition to self-defense benefits, learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can also be a great way to get in shape. The grappling and ground fighting movements require a great deal of physical strength and endurance, making it an excellent workout.

2) Building firearms from scratch

Building firearms from scratch can be a challenging but rewarding process. Those who work on AR-15’s often refer to it as “Legos for adults.”

The process begins with selecting the right components. This includes everything from the barrel and handguard to the grip and trigger assembly. Once all of the parts have been gathered, they must be properly fitted and assembled. This requires a high level of precision and attention to detail in order to ensure that the weapon functions safely and reliably.

The final step is the fun part: going to the range and testing your handywork. From start to finish building your own firearm is an incredibly rewarding process.

3) Hunting

Another great option is hunting.  Hunting is a popular pastime for many veterans, as it provides an opportunity to get outside and enjoy nature. In addition, hunting can also be a great way to put food on the table and connect with your primal roots.

There are a few things to keep in mind before going hunting. First, it is important to check the regulations in your area to make sure you are following the law. Second, you will need to purchase a hunting license. And finally, you will need to acquire the proper safety gear, including a firearm (or bow), ammunition (or arrows), and proper clothing.

4) Rucking

Lastly, rucking as a sport is another pastime that has become popular in the military veteran community. Rucking is a simple activity that has a host of benefits.

For one, it is an excellent way to get some low-impact cardio exercise. Because you are carrying a weighted backpack, rucking also provides a challenging workout for your legs, shoulders, and core. In addition, rucking can be done virtually anywhere, making it a convenient way to fit in some exercise. And because it is relatively easy on the joints, rucking is a great option for people who have arthritis or other joint issues.

Best of all, rucking is relatively inexpensive and requires very little equipment. All you need is a comfortable pair of shoes and a backpack filled with items to add weight. With so many benefits, it is no wonder that rucking has become such a popular activity.

Veterans have a variety of skills that can be transferred to new hobbies. These hobbies can provide a great sense of community, purpose, while continuing to sharpen real world skills. If you are a veteran looking for a new hobby, these four suggestions should give you some ideas to get started.
