Navy Diver (ND)

Navy Diver’s (ND) perform and supervise diving operations using all types of underwater breathing apparatus including, open circuit SCUBA, closed and semi-closed mixed gas underwater breathing apparatus, surface supplied air and mixed gas diving systems and equipment, and saturation diving systems. Their duties include explosive demolitions, and small arms proficiency.

Job Description

As a Navy Diver, you will journey to the darkest depths of the world’s oceans. You may also find yourself in freezing arctic-like conditions underneath icebergs. You will be accomplishing a number of tasks only few can perform with a total focus to achieve.

Some of the many duties you may have as a Navy Diver include:

  • Performs a variety of special diving duties and diving salvage operations around the globe
  • Take part in demolition and construction projects
  • Execute search and rescue misssions
  • Support military and civilian law enforcement agencies
  • Provide logistics such as security and communication during Expeditionary Warfare missions
  • Provide routine ship maintenance, including restoration and repair


You will not be a typical diver which will be proven by your strength and determination.

Specific Responsibilities

As a Navy Diver your job could entail many dive specialties such as the following:

  • Salvage and recovery – Locating and retrieving wreckage; conducting harbor and waterway clearance, underwater repairs and salvage operations in all environments
  • Ship husbandry – Inspecting and repairing ships and submarines
  • Saturation diving – Working and living at extreme depths for days or weeks at a time


Qualifications

To qualify as a Navy Diver you must meet the following requirements:

  • Males and females are eligible
  • Eyesight 20/200 bilateral correctable to 20/25 with no color blindness
  • Minimum Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) score: AR+VE=103, MC=51 or GS+MC+EI=165
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and eligible for security clearance

You must also complete the following Physical Screening Test Requirements:

  • Perform a 500-yard swim using side- or breaststroke in 14 minutes or faster (10-minute rest)
  • Perform a minimum of 42 push-ups in 2 minutes (2-minute rest)
  • Perform a minimum of 50 sit-ups in 2 minutes (2-minute rest)
  • Perform a minimum of 6 dead-hang pull-ups: no time limit (10-minute rest)
  • Run 1.5 miles in 12 minutes 45 seconds or faster
  • Pass a Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL BUD/S physical fitness screening test in Boot Camp and in the Delayed Entry Program (DEP) in order to qualify

  • Aviation Rescue Swimmer (AIRR)
  • Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Technician
  • Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewman (SWCC)
