While serving, every Marine and their immediate families are covered by free, comprehensive medical insurance. Also, Marines receive free, comprehensive dental coverage and they can include their immediate families for a nominal fee. In addition, Marines may purchase life insurance at a minimal cost.
Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance coverage is available in $50,000 increments up to a maximum of $400,000.
Most bases have medical facilities available to active-duty Marines and their immediate families. If there are no medical facilities available on base, they will be referred to a civilian facility.
Dental care is provided for the service member at no charge. Family members can be enrolled for a small monthly fee. The dental plan is similar to most corporate dental insurance plans with preventative care covered and cost shares for other procedures.
Family members will have their choice of civilian dentists off post.
For those who remain in the Marine Corps through retirement, both the Marine and his or her spouse will receive medical benefits at reduced rates throughout their lifetime. They may also receive prescription medicine benefits, as well as care in a Veterans Administration (VA) hospital.
Veterans Group Life Insurance (VGLI) is a post-separation insurance that allows service members to convert their Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (SGLI) coverage to renewable term insurance. Members can convert to VGLI without proof of good health within 120 days of separation, or for up to one year after the 120-day period with proof of good health. Premiums can be deducted directly from retirement pay or VA disability compensation each month.
