You will process in at one of the 65 MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Stations) across the nation or in Puerto Rico. Several of the important things will take place there are; you will take the ASVAB, find out if you physically qualify and choose a Military Occupation Specialties (MOS). After you take the appropriate tests and learn about the numerous opportunities available, you will officially enlist and be sworn in to the United States Army.
Testing
The ASVAB measures aptitude in a broad range of career fields. It is available in both computerized (CAT-ASVAB) and traditional "paper and pencil" formats. The Army will take the test section results to produce a score for various career fields.
You may have already taken the ASVAB in high school or for enlistment purposes. If so, tell your recruiter or your test administrator, because you may not be required to take the test again.
Physical
Everyone entering the armed forces must be in good health to endure the challenges of basic training and military service. Your physical examination will test things such as blood, urine, muscle groups, joint maneuvers, hearing, eyesight and more.
Picking your MOS
A service liaison counselor will tell you about the many job opportunities available and best suited to you based on your interests and ASVAB score. It is a good idea to research your options ahead of time. The Counselor will also go over the enlistment agreement as well as answer any questions you may have.
Enlist and Get Sworn in
A final interview, fingerprinting for a FBI check and pre-enlistment briefing will be completed before you take the oath of enlistment. Members of your family are welcome to watch and take pictures as you take the oath.
If you are entering the Delayed Entry Program, or not enlisting at this time, return transportation to your home will be coordinated by your recruiter. If you are entering active duty you will receive instructions on your transportation arrangements to basic training.
Meals & Lodging
Meals and/or overnight lodging accommodations, if needed, will be arranged for you. Most applicants will share a room with another applicant and are expected to be considerate of other guests and hotel property. You will pay only for extras, such as telephone calls.
