Little-known
program covers long-term care expenses for veterans
It's
called the "Aid and Attendance Allowance," and it pays up to $1,470 a
month to qualifying veterans, $945 a month to surviving spouses, or
$1,743 a month to couples to help defray the costs of long-term care.
To qualify, veterans must:
1. Have served in wartime, but combat not required.
2. Have no more than $80,000 in assets, not counting the family home,
car, and personal possessions.
3. Prove financial need (for example: expenses exceed income).
4. Show that the veteran needs someone to help them with basic
activities of living, including bathing, grooming and eating.
