February 13, 2016 – For many in the military, the opportunity to travel abroad was part of why they first signed up, which is why many US officers look to relocate abroad for some time. Although the US has bases all over the world, Italy has to be one of the best choices, offering up numerous opportunities to experience the country’s world-famous food, historical cities and amazing nature. If this sounds like what you’ve been looking for, here are just some of the possible options.
1. Sigonella Naval Base
Located on the picturesque island of Sicily, near the town of Catania, Sigonella is a NATO base that houses numerous US surveillance and other activities. Catania (and really all of Sicily) is famous for its incredible food, particularly the fresh local seafood (check out the famous fish market). If fishing is your type of thing, you’ll have endless opportunities to catch your own, although you could just as easily let someone else do the hard work and still reap the delicious benefits in one of the area’s many amazing restaurants. Sicily also generally has excellent weather and some truly incredible land and seascapes.
2. Aviano Air Base
Aviano Air Base hosts several US Air Force fighter squadrons as well as numerous support personnel, all of which take part in a variety of NATO missions. The base is located near the towns of Aviano and Pordenone in the northeastern part of Italy. While Pordenone itself has numerous spectacular historical landmarks, the real draw of this base is Venice. Located only 50 miles away, you’ll have plenty of time to explore this romantic, mystical city on the water and its maze of canals.
3. Gaeta Naval Base
Gaeta Naval Base hosts various US Army and Navy personnel and is one of the most beautiful and technologically advanced bases in Italy. The beautiful seaside town of Gaeta itself is truly a sight to behold, featuring beautiful views and amazing historical sites, including military fortifications that stretch back to Roman times. The area also features beautiful beaches, incredible Italian food and culture. It also happens to be located only 50 miles from Naples and 75 miles from Rome, allowing you easy access to these famous cities as well.
4. Naples Naval Base
Naples Naval Base is home to both the US Sixth Fleet and US Naval Forces Europe, housing well over 10,000 personnel. It is located in the lovely, historic city of Naples, one of a handful of Italian cities with a strong claim to the title of the most beautiful. The city and the entire surrounding region are not only famous for their beauty but also their amazing food, with some of the best known Italian dishes originating right here. Like Gaeta, this base combines the best of sun, sea, food, culture and history.
5. Camp Darby Army Base
Of all the US bases in Italy, Camp Darby is perhaps the most well-known and sought after, with more than 40,000 military visitors a year coming to its military resort complex and relaxing on its famed private beach (the only US military beach in Europe) located in prime territory directly on the Italian Riviera. You’ll also get to experience fantastic Tuscan wine, cuisine and culture, plus numerous nearby tourist attractions like Livorno and Pisa.
